How do you get an acting agent? That is the question. There are several ways to acquire an acting agent whether he/she is a commercial or theatrical one. My recommendation is to do your research first and try to find an agent before you come to LA. Be wary of the scammers and never pay for an agent! Below are several methods that I've tried...
The first method is to get a list of agents addresses via Sag/Aftra website. (www.sagaftra.org) Then print out address labels so it looks more professional. Then you can mail them a copy of your headshot and resume in a 8x10 mailer. I sent out 100 of these and received 5 responses from agents. I researched them and found from google that some were scammers so I avoided them. I was left with 2 of them. I reached out via phone and set up a meeting.
Agent's Website
The second method in getting an agent is via their website. If you have done your research and know which ones you want to submit to then you can submit via their websites if they have an option. If the agent is interested, then they will reach out. For me, I am more of an assertive type and I would call after a week to see if they have received the email. During the call, i would ask if they had room on their roster for me and to see if they would like to setup a meeting.
Imdb
The third method is to use Imdb Pro. This one is a bit unconventional but can work. If you have an IMDB Pro account, then you have access to all agents addresses, contact number, and email. A word of caution, not all the info is updated so it may or may not work. You can email them directly your headshot and resume. Also, I would write some highlights about yourself in the body. At the bottom of your email, I would ask for a meeting.
Agents Showcase
The fourth method is an agent showcase. Sometimes acting schools will invite a few agents to their classes to have actors showcase a scene or monologue. I've never tried this before but I've heard it works. If the agent likes you then they can add you to their roster.
Referral
The last method is a referral. I find this one to be the best option. You can ask for a referral from another actor who is currently represented by them that you personally know. You can ask your acting teacher if they can refer you as well. As you know in Hollywood, its who you know. Agents are more likely to pick you up if they have another actor on their roster that vouches for you.
As you can see, there are several methods in acquiring an acting agent. I would try all of them to see which ones work for you. Also, remember be wary of scammers. Break a leg!
